The product contains a complex of B vitamins, vitamin E, and phospholipid forms of linoleic, linoleic, and oleic acids. Essentiale forte N is widely used in Europe to treat liver dysfunction, such as that caused by chronic infections, allergies, drug toxicity, or other diseases. Essential Forte N is of interest to steroids used by bodybuilders and athletes for its ability to reduce liver strain caused by anabolic/androgenic steroids (particularly those compounds that are c-17 alpha alkylated).

The primary mechanism of action of Essential Forte N appears to focus on providing antioxidants and building blocks needed to repair damaged cells. This product contains primarily polyunsaturated phospholipids (primarily phosphatidylcholine) and a complex of vitamins B and E. Phosphatidylcholine is defined as a membrane lipid and is a key component of the Essential Forte N formula. This phospholipid is important for cellular integrity, adding flexibility and strength. Phosphatidylcholine has long been considered an essential liver supplement that supports normal liver fat metabolism and overall liver health. It is also believed to be an important antioxidant for liver and pancreatic health. It is likely that additional vitamins are included in the Essential Forte N formula to enhance the drug’s antioxidant and regenerative properties.

Essentiale Forte N was the first product shown in a clinical study to mitigate the hepatotoxic effects of anabolic steroid use. compared to the control group (subjects taking nonsteroidal drugs). A comprehensive liver enzyme panel was used to determine the relative level of liver deformation. As expected, the steroid-only group saw significant increases in liver enzymes that were well above normal. Liver enzymes were also elevated in steroid users taking Essential Forte N, but were similar to control drugs and remained within normal limits. The researchers concluded: “A positive association of severity of abuse with elevated liver enzyme levels suggests a link between AAS abuse and liver cell damage. However, when AAS was acquired by [Essentiale forte N],… the hepatotoxic effect appears to be weakened.” Although this study does not guarantee that liver steroid toxicity can be completely eliminated, it supports the use of Essential forte N with hepatotoxic anabolic steroids.

History

Essentiale forte N has been sold for many years in Western and Eastern Europe, where it is distributed by Aventis (formerly Rhone-Poulenc Rorer). This compound has been approved for the treatment of fatty liver disease and other liver dysfunctions. European bodybuilders have been using this drug for many years due to its overall value, including for liver health. However, it did not attract the attention of athletes in the United States and Canada until 2008, when a study on its effects on steroid users was published in the journal Clinical Toxicology. Since then, this natural medicine has become popular among North American consumers.
